When people ask "how are you?" one answer comes to mind: "busy (but no complaints)." That's more about what I'm doing than how I am doing but busy just seems to permeate everything. I'm guessing it's not just me.
How are you?
Bring On Year 2: In August I was featured in Wesleyan's Employee Newsletter and introduced to faculty at Wesleyan's Convocation in September. It goes without saying (but I'll say it anyway), that I am thrilled to be into my second year as Wesleyan's inaugural Ombuds..Ombudsperson...Ombuddy.
Distinguished Faculty Speaker - 2018 Family Weekend President's Address and Reception
Family Weekend is the first time many parents get to see their college students and I'm honored to have been asked to serve as the Distinguished Faculty Speaker at the President's Address and Reception for Emerson College's 2018 Family Weekend. The weekend brings together 400-500 families and my 15 minutes with the diverse group of students and their families builds off of my work in communication and conflict resolution and the weekend's theme:
"One Family. One Emerson."
Spoiler alert: since I'm a trainer and a skill-builder by nature rather than a traditional lecturer, I'm going to engage the crowd in an active exercise to show them first-hand what it means to connect...we grow when we push past our comfort zone, right? #liveandlearnintheawkward
Using Dispute Resolution to Address Abuse and Title IX Violations
I've been asked to be part of a panel for the Mass. Bar Association to discuss sexual abuse and methods of addressing abuse and harassment using various forms of dispute resolution. My area of expertise for the panel is the role of the Ombuds in helping address issues that include Title IX concerns.
Moderating the panel is none other than Walter "Robbie" Robinson, who led the Boston Globe Spotlight team that exposed the clergy abuse story and is the subject of the movie, "Spotlight" (he's played by Michael Keaton). I'm truly honored to be among such important folks talking about such important topics.
Workshops, Coaching and Consulting
Trifecta! I've found my way (back) into a third New England state to work with some creative and talented folks.
For the next few months I'll be in Rhode Island providing workshops, coaching and consulting in conflict management, effective workplace negotiation, intersectionality and combatting bias. The only thing I love more than spreading the word on how to #doconflictbetter and #standingupforyourselfwithoutknockingothersdown is challenging myself to get those skills across to different kinds of thinkers. I'm looking forward to the work and the challenge.
Check out my website for more information on workshops, coaching and consulting.
